National Tailgating Day – Wear Those Shades!

Southeastern Ocularists Inc.

Happy National Tailgating Day – but while you are out there enjoying a juicy brat by the grill, be sure to have those sunglasses on your face as protection for your eyes!  Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is providing protection to your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The sun can be just as harmful to your eyes as it is on your skin, without proper protection.

Benefits of Wearing a Prosthetic Eye

Prosthetic_Eye_DiagramProsthetic eyes have many benefits for individuals who wear one (or two), opposed to wearing an eye patch or nothing at all. Technological advances have made it possible so that a good prosthetic eye looks extremely natural and hard to recognize by appearance. There are many benefits provided by artificial eyes such as proper facial function and one’s physical appearance/self esteem.

Happy National Red Wine Day!

Southeastern Ocularists Inc.

Researchers found a substance in grapes can protect blood vessels in the eye from being damaged by aging.  Resveratrol is a compound that stops the growth of harmful blood vessels in the retina and blindness associated with eye diseases such as macular degeneration – the leading cause in vision loss.

Other studies have linked it to anti-ageing, heart disease and cancer protection. Resveratrol is found in particularly high levels in grape skin.  If you don’t drink red wine, you can get the same benefits from consuming peanuts, raspberries, red grape juice, blueberries and cranberries.

So sit back and have a glass! (But not too much)

Keep Your Prosthesis Properly Cleaned

Artificial Eyes and Proper CleaningAre you keeping your prosthesis properly cleaned? Keeping the surface of your artificial eye clean will help reduce irritation within your eye socket. How you ask? – Here are a few tips:

1) The best way to clean your prosthesis is with a mild liquid soap or baby shampoo and water.

2) Contact lens cleaners are great for a quick cleaning.

3) NEVER use heavy antibacterial soap or alcohol to clean your prosthesis – this can damage your artificial eye!
